Continuing with the week's theme: Applying Dove Chocolate wisdom to the creative life....
Pearl #2:
This is kind of hard to read. Sometimes, when there is chocolate on the other side, I claw through wrappers like a threatened bear... so ANYWAY... it says Give them something to talk about.
We live in a social time. "Conversation is capital” is a phrase I'm tired of hearing. I get it. If people talk about you, they know you/your art exists, which is the first step in making an impact. And maybe they’re talking because you’re doing something amazing. In which case, keep them talking.
But sometimes talk is just talk.
Compelling art can get people talking, but so can a number of uninspiring topics. In recent years bins of rubber chickens, potato salad, and Kim Kardashian’s butt have all spent time on the top trending list. And so, it seems, sometimes conversation is CRAPital. Unless views are truly your ultimate artistic goal, I think you can strive for more.
Give them something to think about.
Don’t give them chit-chat fodder. Instead, help them form new connections. Start a chain of discovery. Bring them closer to understanding something... anything... probably themselves.
Outlive the conversation.
